About Islip, New York
The Hamlet of Islip is located on the south shore of Long Island in southwestern Suffolk County approximately 56 miles east of Manhattan and approximately 72 miles west of Montauk. Islip is bordered by the hamlets of Bay Shore, West Islip, East Islip and Brentwood. Islip is close to both Dowling College and St. John’s University.

Housing: Islip’s home styles include capes, ranches, contemporaries, colonials, hi-ranches and larger luxury homes south of Montauk Highway closer to the Bay. Many of the old estates have been broken up and the land belonging to the former estates sold off.
Transportation: Islip does have local bus transportation and is the Islip stop on the Long Island Road’s Montauk branch.
Shopping: Islip has a lively downtown area with restaurants, shops and movie theater, and has a strong sense of community. The largest shopping is at the South Shore Mall, as well as The Arches and Bellport Outlets shopping nearby.
Parks: There are local beaches on the Great South Bay including Atlantique Beach, Benjamin Beach, and Islip Beach. Islip is close to South Shore beaches like Robert Moses, Jones Beach and Fire Island.

Some Historical Information About Islip, NY
Islip has matured from a fishing area with bustling tourism to a bedroom community with bay front beaches, a beautiful lake, canals, historic village with architectural treasures, co-habitating with some industry. Islip’s close proximity to the Great South Bay and Robert Moses Causeway makes it the perfect home for the boater, fisherman, and beach lover alike.
Islip was old money estate country. Islip and Great River are two of the oldest communities in Islip Township. The great and powerful and rich and famous came here to spend their fortunes building lavish estates to accommodate their lifestyles which included opulent mansion on the Great South Bay with manicured landscapes, swimming pools, and tennis courts. The residents were frequently members of or had something to do with forming local yacht clubs because yachting and sailing were traditions passed through the families. The late 1800's - the early 1900's created new millionaires and with new and expanded industries and many of them came to Long Island to build. They built here because it was in close to Manhattan, and was a sportsman's paradise. There were fox hunts and horseback riding in Old Westbury and Babylon. Yachting and fishing in Babylon, Oakdale, Bay Shore and Great River and golfing in Sayville and Bay Shore.
Islip was part of the “Hidden Gold Coast” on the south shore of Long Island which extended eastward from the Nassau County border to the Bayport / Blue Point along the Great South Bay. The south shore Gold Coast was closely knit, but ethnically and religiously diverse and tolerant. The area was settled predominately by sugar plantation owners, sugar refiners, attorneys, capitalist, investment bankers, merchants, and shipping magnets. South Shore families were associated with Gulden Mustard, Domino Sugar, Entenmann Bakery, Moran Tugboats, Adam and Chicle Chewing Gum, Doxsee Clams, Lorillard and American Tabacco, deMurias and Bachia Cigars, Pinkerton Detective Agency, Abraham and Strauss, Singer Sewing Machine, Bon Ami Cleanser, and Republic Pictures.
Bayberry Point is along the Great South Bay and is made up of several winding streets that are seperated by canals. Alhough this area is not gated, it is an affluent area. The area was originally designed by Horace Havemeyer with Spanish-Style mansions overlooking the Great South Bay.
Some of the estates remain:
- Now called the Scully Estate, later donated to the National Audubon Society. This was a 300-acre gentleman's farm called Windholme Farm and was owned by Samuel and Natalie Peters,and the French chateau style mansion was called Wereholme
- The present Islip Art Museum was once the home of millionaire businessman Harry K Knapp.
