Some Historical Information About Locust Valley

Real estate photo taken in Locust Valley NYWhen the first railroad reached Locust Valley in 1879,it brought about a change for Locust Valley. It developed into a commercial center and thrived around the Locust Valley station and the nearby intersection of Forest Avenue / Buckram Road and Birch Hill Road. As the North Shore of Long Island grew into the Gold Coast in the early 20th century, the commercial center grew to serve the great estates that were being established in the surrounding communities of Bayville, Centre Island, Lattingtown, Mill Neck, Matinecock, Muttontown and The Brookvilles. Weekend guests arriving at the Locust Valley Station were often fetched in motorcars which would stop in the hamlet for last moment provisions.

The late 1800’s – the early 1900’s created new millionaires with new and expanded industries and many of them came to Long Island to build. Most of these powerful families came to Long Island because it was in close proximity to Manhattan, and was a sportsman’s paradise. There were foxhunts and horseback riding in Old Westbury and Wheatley Hills. Yachting and fishing could be found off the coast of Glen Cove, Sands Point, Kings Point, and Huntington. Golfing was popular in Brookville and North Hills.
